Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland

In 2014, on my birthday, I traveled to Switzerland for an interview at IMD Business School for a Master's program. Although I had been accepted into a Veterans Program at the State Department, I needed an international credential within a year of starting the program to maintain my eligibility. Given that U.S. universities typically offer two-year programs, I decided to apply to IMD and was accepted. However, my position at the State Department was later altered to one I was not interested in pursuing. Consequently, I opted to complete the graduate-level certifications commonly pursued by many Europeans instead of the full Master's degree. The program was structured in three parts, with completion of two parts resulting in a graduate-level certification. During this intensive experience, classes were held seven days a week for over a month, which included extensive writing assignments upon my return to the U.S.

IMD Business School, Switzerland

The educational environment at IMD, recognized as one of Europe's leading business schools, offered a unique experience. Having previously attended Georgetown and George Washington Universities, I noted that the US institutions generally maintained a more rigorous and demanding curriculum. In contrast, the IMD program emphasized practical business applications. In Europe, prospective students must be sponsored by their employers, who cover the full cost of their studies. In my class, I was one of only three American students.

IMD Class Outing

Our outing included eating at a Chalet, goiong to a chocolate factory, and then a hike in the snow.  I passed on the hike and enjoyed a drink at a bar that was designed by the man who designed the scenes for the movie, Aliens.
